Bay Area Shoji Lantern Workshop

Jay Van Arsdale will be teaching a workshop this fall on building Shoji Lanterns. The shoji lantern is a wood joined frame with shoji panels on the sides.

At the first meeting, you will discuss and design your own personal project and make practice joints. Your project can be small desk size, hanging lamp, or taller standing structure

The workshop will meet on six Sundays from 9 am - 4pm.

  • October 6 & 20

  • November 3 & 17

  • December 1

Plan on bringing your tools as well as lunch.

Fee is $350 for workshop (cost of materials will be decided after scope of project is decided).

Kez Colorado 2019

Join us for a fun and unique event from 10am - 5pm, focused on Japanese Woodworking, complete with 4 different lectures and demonstrations. A BBQ lunch will be available, an all ages hand plane competition will seek the thinnest shave, and prizes will be awarded for the thinnest full shaving. We’re also delighted to be joined by special guest Jay Van Arsdale from Kezuroukai USA.

Kezuroukai Shoji Sundays (2018)

Design, build and install shoji with Jay Van Arsdale at his Oakland Studio.

Sundays:

  • 21 & 28 October

  • 4 & 18 November

  • 2 December

  • 9:00am-4:00pm

We will build a small shoji with kick board

We will: use common tools and useful specialty tools and devices, explore joinery options, kumiko design – (single sided and sandwich construction) tracking options, shoji gami options (natural and manmade) woods options and other questions that arise.

  •  Limit is 8 students

  • Cost is $250 plus materials ($100) - $350

  • The event is free to attend. There is a $5-10 suggested donation so we can cover the costs of hosting as well as $10 suggested donation for participating in hand planing competition.
  • All registration is at the door.
  • There will not be food at the event. Please bring your own lunch or we would be happy to direct you to a local food spot.
